Long hours, no power, remote location, and a machine that has to keep working when a lighter unit would be on its second replacement. If your work doesn't have at least two of those, petrol or electric will serve you better for less.
Both go where the power doesn't, so the choice between them comes down to how hard and how long the machine works.
The trade-off is entry cost and weight. A diesel machine costs more up front and is heavier to move. It pays that back in fuel and service life — but only if the hours justify it. For occasional or light mobile work, petrol is the more sensible buy.
Cold water covers the bulk of heavy site work — compacted mud and clay, plant and machinery, concrete, stockyards and general site cleaning. Fewer components, less to service, and on a remote site that matters more than it does in a workshop.
Hot water is the specification when contamination is organic. Grease, oil, fats, proteins and biological matter break down chemically under heat in a way pressure cannot achieve alone. Mining plant with baked-on grease, agricultural and livestock environments, and food or processing facilities are the common cases.
Pressure breaks the bond, flow carries the mess away. Diesel machines usually sit at the upper end of both, because the applications that justify diesel are the ones that demand output.
Duty cycle is the specification that decides whether a machine lasts, and it's the reason diesel exists in this category. A unit rated for occasional use will fail under continuous daily operation regardless of its headline PSI. Be honest about hours per day and days per week when you're comparing — that number matters more than the pressure figure, and it's the difference between a machine that lasts five years and one that lasts one. If the machine is running full shifts, the diesel premium is the cheaper option over its life.
Diesel is the specification for long hours away from power. Petrol pressure washers also need no outlet, cost less to buy, and cover the wider range of mobile commercial work — the right call unless the hours are genuinely heavy. Electric pressure washers run quiet with no exhaust for indoor wash bays and fixed installations, but need reliable supply and three phase for the higher-output machines.
It depends entirely on hours. Diesel costs more up front and pays it back through lower fuel consumption and longer service life under sustained load. If the machine runs full shifts regularly, diesel is cheaper over its life. For occasional or light mobile work, petrol is the more sensible buy.

Hot water is the specification when the contamination is grease, oil, fat, protein or biological matter — heat breaks those down chemically in a way pressure alone cannot. They're the common choice. No power access needed, sustained output across long shifts, and most sites already store diesel for plant and vehicles so there's no second fuel to manage. Robust frames with tie-down points matter as much as the specification on sites where the machine gets transported constantly.
Longer than a petrol equivalent on the same work, which is the main reason to buy one. Service life comes down to duty cycle rating and pump specification more than brand — a gearbox-driven triplex plunger pump at reduced RPM will outlast a direct drive pump several times over under daily use.
With a tank, yes. Trailer mounted units carry their own water, and skid mounted machines can draw from a tank in the vehicle. Check the machine's flow rate against your tank capacity to work out realistic run time between refills — high flow machines empty a tank faster than operators expect.
